As an Environmental Engineering student at the University of Wollongong, he was looking for something to do on the weekends and was driven by a natural entrepreneurial instinct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always had a bit of a knack for business and caught that bug early in life,\u201d he recalled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A trip to India that same year changed everything. There, he first learned about social enterprises, sparking an idea that would shape his business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI read that socks were one of the most requested items in homeless shelters, and it all clicked,\u201d Herrero said. \u201cI knew that if I ever started a business, it had to have a social impact.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With limited capital, selling socks was an affordable starting point. He launched Sydney Sock Project with a simple mission: for every pair sold, another would be donated to someone in need. His mother played a key role from the very beginning, helping him pack orders and work the markets. After a year of juggling his business and a corporate job, Herrero took the leap into full-time entrepreneurship, teaching himself everything from Facebook ads to building a website through YouTube tutorials. As he expanded online, Herrero stayed committed to giving back, donating 10% of all sales to charities like the Children\u2019s Cancer Institute and WIRES.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast forward to today, what began as a humble market stall has grown into a thriving business making a positive social impact, projected to reach $6-7 million in 2025 and making over half a million donations to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2025\/05\/img-ss-SydneySockProject3-anz-2x-1024x575.jpg.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66087\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2025\/05\/img-ss-SydneySockProject3-anz-2x-1024x575.jpg.webp 1024w, https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2025\/05\/img-ss-SydneySockProject3-anz-2x-768x431.jpg.webp 768w, https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2025\/05\/img-ss-SydneySockProject3-anz-2x-1536x863.jpg.webp 1536w, https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/wp-content\/smush-webp\/2025\/05\/img-ss-SydneySockProject3-anz-2x.jpg.webp 1718w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-from-chaos-to-control-navigating-explosive-growth-and-overcoming-fulfillment-hurdles\">From chaos to control: Navigating explosive growth and overcoming fulfillment hurdles<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The brand\u2019s breakthrough came when a bee-themed sock collection in partnership with Save the Bees Australia went viral on social media. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI ran an ad for it, and orders started rolling in\u2014first five a day, then 10, then 20,\u201d Herrero said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2021, the company was processing 28 shipments daily, and within months, that number tripled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI set small, meaningful goals. Hitting 50 orders was a milestone, then 100. If I got close, say to 98 pairs, I\u2019d ask my mum to call her friends to help push the numbers a little further and hit the target!\u201d Herrero recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-manual-fulfillment-reaches-its-breaking-point\">Manual fulfillment reaches its breaking point<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early days, Herrero managed fulfillment manually. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMoney was tight, so I had to carefully plan every dollar of profit. I used the cheapest apps I could find to manage fulfillment,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He initially relied on Addition, which connected to Australia Post, but the process wasn\u2019t sustainable for long-term growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was entering customer details and printing labels one by one. It was slow, glitchy, and prone to mistakes,\u201d Herrero shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-making-the-switch-to-shipstation\">Making the switch to ShipStation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As demand surged and orders piled up, fellow entrepreneurs recommended ShipStation and in 2021, he made the switch. Immediately, ShipStation\u2019s seamless integration with Shopify and multiple carriers, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/partners\/sendle\/\">Sendle<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/partners\/australia-post\/\">Australia Post<\/a>, streamlined operations. I can get them up and running in just one or two hours, which is amazing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bringing-order-to-warehouse-chaos-with-batch-picking\">Bringing order to warehouse chaos with batch-picking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As the business grew, it went from occupying just four shelves to 13 in the warehouse and picking items from different locations quickly became chaotic. ShipStation\u2019s batch-picking feature helped organize warehouse locations, so the team can now print a pick list in the order of the warehouse layout. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis has made picking so much more efficient. Before, staff were running back and forth across aisles, which was incredibly time-consuming,\u201d Herrero explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Switching to ShipStation also enabled the warehouse team to batch print up to 500 orders at once, cutting down the need for extra staff for shipping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs our volume quadrupled, those time savings became critical because I didn\u2019t want my workload to quadruple with it,\u201d Herrero shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-time-and-cost-savings-with-rate-shopper-and-custom-labels\">Time and cost savings with Rate Shopper and custom labels<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Another major efficiency booster was the introduction of ShipStation\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shipstation.com\/rate-shopper\/\">Rate Shopper<\/a>, which compares rates across multiple carriers to select the most cost-effective options. This feature alone has saved the team 45 minutes a day, which adds up to a phenomenal 11,000 minutes a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Custom packing slips with Sydney Sock Project\u2019s branding were another game-changer. Previously, the team had to generate packing slips in Shopify and labels in ShipStation separately. Now, the process is seamless, saving time while improving branding and readability; Herrero joked this has meant his mum no longer needs her glasses when she\u2019s helping out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-smart-inventory-management-through-pre-order-automation\">Smart inventory management through pre-order automation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of his favorite features is ShipStation\u2019s ability to automatically hold pre-orders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve adopted a business model where we release eight to 10 products, ordering around 1,000 units of each and testing them through marketing channels like Meta ads. Once we identify the best sellers, we can order larger quantities and still pre-sell them. Just two years later,\u00a0 Sydney Sock Project smashed that number in November 2024 during the Black Friday sales season alone\u2014doubling its entire first-year volume in just one month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His advice for other ecommerce entrepreneurs? <strong>\u201cAdopt ShipStation early. It\u2019s an affordable option that scales with your business as you grow.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sydney Sock Project\u2019s next big milestone is an ambitious one\u2014making a million donations by the end of 2025. Herrero added: \u201cWe\u2019ve already hit half a million, and I want to reach that goal before I turn 30.
